Enoch Timeline
An Enoch timeline needs two different clocks: the story is set before the flood, while the surviving Enochic writings were composed and transmitted much later. Keeping narrative setting and historical composition separate prevents common chronological mistakes.
Primeval setting: Enoch in Genesis
Genesis 5 places Enoch in the generations before Noah and says that he walked with God and was taken by God. That brief biblical notice becomes the narrative foundation for later heavenly-revelation traditions.
Second Temple Enochic literature
The components now collected as 1 Enoch were produced and edited over an extended period in ancient Judaism. The sections have different literary profiles and proposed dates; there is no responsible single-year date for the whole 108-chapter collection.
Qumran evidence
Aramaic Enoch manuscripts among the Dead Sea Scrolls show that substantial Enochic material circulated in antiquity. Qumran evidence is especially important for the Watchers and astronomical traditions.
Greek and Ethiopic transmission
Parts of Enoch circulated in Greek. The full collection ultimately survived in Geʿez through Ethiopian Christian manuscript tradition, preserving material that disappeared in complete form from other language traditions.
Modern study
Modern editions, including the work of R. H. Charles, brought Ethiopic and other witnesses into broader scholarly circulation. Margins uses that historical source tradition while linking readers to current manuscript and study context.
